Bharatbenz is a commercial vehicle brand of Daimler Truck AG that was specially developed for the Indian market. The vehicles are produced in Chennai in the south of the country. The first truck ran off the assembly line on June 21, 2012; Buses have also been manufactured since 2015.
Daimler and the predecessor Daimler-Benz have been selling commercial vehicles in India for decades. However, the vehicles, which are mainly produced in Germany, are considered to be top-of-the-art technology products that can only be settled in small quantities on the market marked by special conditions. On April 5, 2006, it was therefore decided to develop appropriate commercial vehicles for the growing Indian market. First of all, Daimler tried to find an adequate cooperation partner on site.
In 2008, a joint venture with the Indian Group Hero Honda Motors, one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, was closed, which included the development of production of commercial vehicles. However, this contract was surprisingly dissolved in 2009.
Therefore, Daimler founded the subsidiary Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt., Which built its own work in Chennai, a city in the state of Tamil Nadu, on an approximately 160 hectare company premises. When opening up the site, the company was carried out by the semi -governmental State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd. (Sipcot) supported. In addition, the government of the state promotes the settlement of companies, for example by improving the infrastructure.
