The Gor'kovsky Avomobel'yj Zavod, often abbreviated with the acronym GAZ, is a car company founded in the Soviet Union in 1929 to Nižnij Novgorod, a city that from 1932 to 1990 had the name of Gor'kij, from which the company name.
The GAZ was founded with the help and collaboration of the American Ford Motor Company, because for the first floor of the USSR, it made ample leverage on western technological help to develop the heavy Soviet industry.
The first car model was produced only in 1932 with the name of Gaz-a, identical to the American homologous Ford Model A in aesthetics and mechanics. Similarly, the Ford Model AA wastached with the name of Gaz-Aa. Subsequently, the models produced acquired originality. Among the best known were the Volga and the Čajka, a limousine mainly reserved for PCUS officials and other state bodies.
The GAZ is also known for the production of the first Russian off -road vehicles, inspired and derivatives by the jeeps built in the United States during the Second World War.
After acquiring an abandoned production plant in 2006 from Chrysler where Dodge Stratus was assembled, in 2008 he put a new model in production, derived in part by the Chrysler Sebring and called Volga Siber.
Currently the company is called the "Gaz Group" which includes the branch of cars (precisely GAZ), bus (Liaz and Paz), vans and work vehicles.
