The Canadian ballast tractor Pacific P12W3 Ultra of the 1977 model is a masterpiece and the highest achievement of Pacific from Vancouver, which from 1948 to 1991 produced huge trucks and tractors of the premium class. They didn’t save on quality...
Pentecitar tractor with a Cummins V-12T engine with a volume of 28 litres with a capacity of 800 hp. He had a number of constructive features, the main of which was the system for coordinating the thrust when working in the coupling (as it worked - I did not understand, but I believe that they tied through the hydraulics of automatic transmission). Because even such tank power was often not enough to transport what customers needed. Therefore, the tractors worked in the coupling of two, three or even four cars.
Of course, such cars are completely piece. A total of Pacific P12W3 Ultra cars were manufactured, and 23 units were manufactured, and they left, mainly in South Africa, where large-sized structures weighing hundreds of tons were successfully dragged.
Of course, the Ultra version was the top-end. Much more was produced simpler, Pacific P12W3 with a 500 hp engine, which was quite massively purchased both in Canada and in the USA and even in New Zealand and separately note a series of 17 cars with motors according to 615 hp, who worked in a coal mine in Soda Springs, Idaho.
However, the crisis of the early 80s crushed a successful company. Her magnificent P-510-F trucks (lighter and masses that gave the main income) turned out to be too good for this world due to the fact that they did not save on the material. In particular, weighed three tons more than competitors of equal carrying capacity, which reduced their attractiveness in the world of the sharply rising price of fuel. Yes, and they cost more ... Sales went on the decline. The last truck was sold in 1987, the company floundered for spare parts and service for several years, but in 1991 it finally closed.
However, this is not quite the end of history. In 2002, Coast Power Train from the city of New Westminster bought everything that was able to - all the rights, drawings and the remaining equipment. It turned out that Pacific giants are so good that they still work, and there is a demand for spare parts. Moreover, the new office called Pacific Truck Manoufacturing Inc. It still works well, supplying “eternal” Pacific trucks to spare parts, restoring worn cars to the “new” state and in constant readiness to produce new giants on the first whistle of a potential client.
