Commercial heavy trucks and components are made by Wétern Star Trucks. The company's main office is based in the city of Portland, Oregon in the United States.
Semon Emil Knudsen, the son of William Signius Knudsen, a prominent figure in the car business, created the firm in 1967 under the White Motor Company umbrella. The Semon's many years of expertise at GM and Ford paid off, as the business flourished under its leadership after the loss of the parent firm.
In 1981, Volvo Trucks took over Western Star Trucks and other assets of the parent firm, marking the beginning of the company's presence in North America. In a period of nine years, Volvo Trucks produced their high-cabin trucks under the North American manufacturer brand typical of European manufacturers, while Western Star Trucks was in the midst of its own implementation. In that time, Australian businessman Terry Pibodi acquired Western Star Trucks. After 10 years, Pibodi was able to sell Western Star Trucks to Freightliner, a branch of Daimler, the world's largest truck manufacturer. From that point on, the company's record is entirely contemporary.
Currently, the firm manufactures a variety of grade 8 (North American classification) large trucks that can haul in excess of 15 tons. As a company, Western Star Trucks naturally pursues the B2B market, which means focusing on other businesses rather than consumers. Trucks from Western Star Trucks may be used for the following tasks:
Budget choice available in SB (front axle is behind the engine) and SF (rear axle is in front of the engine) (the front axis is located at the engine level). There is a range of 350–470 horsepower from the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine.
The 4800 series is distinguished by its bumper affixed to the rear of its 2,770 mm cabin and its more potent engine choices compared to the 4700 series (109 inches). Western Star supplies the vehicle's chassis and empty cabin so that the buyer may add whatever accessories they need, such as a detachable body, mixer, tank, crane, or cassone. Popular for unloading and mixing, this model also comes with the Twin Steer option fitted at the factory.
The Western Star 4900 is a trunk tractor built for hauling a wide variety of freight. There are five distinct variants available: the SB (with the front axis positioned behind the engine), SF (with the front axis located at engine level), EX (with a larger cabin), TS (with two axes up front), and XD (with a rear-mounted engine) (for especially difficult operating conditions).
Western Star's newest model, the 5700xe (XE stands for Extreme Efficiency), is the industry's first aerodynamic truck. The 2015 release was designed specifically for use on roads. The vehicle's rear bumper measures 3,200 millimeters (126 inches) in length and is installed in a backdrop assale position. Daycab or berth configurations are possible.
The 6900 series is Western Star's highest capacity model and is designed specifically for off-road uses including forestry, mining, and other similar operations. Both the Extreme Duty (XD) and Twin Steer (TS) versions include a bumper at the rear of the 3,580 mm (141-inch) cabin, and may be distinguished from one another by their size and the rounded corners of their headlights.
